Self Help & Reflection: Making The Right Decision.

Life throws you a curve-ball every now and then. Depending on what state of mind you’re in depends on how you handle it. Sometimes you can make a quick decision and it may either be the perfect decision or it may be what worked at the time.

Then there are the times that you seem to have all the time in the world to make a decision about either a problem or perhaps just something you want or think you should do. You want to make the right decision and afterward you even may make yourself believe that you made the right decision, but deep down inside there is always the question of whether or not you actually made the right decision.

Remember those adventure books from when you were a child? You get to the end of a chapter and have two, sometimes 3 choices. Depending on your choice, you would have to turn to a certain page and each choice provided a different outcome of the story. That’s how every big decision in life is like. Did I make the right decision?

The decision making processĀ  may be a short process or it may be something that gets drawn out over time. If you have time to make a choice then there is no sense in rushing in to it. Either way, whether it has to be made quickly or if you have time, a few things to take in to consideration.

Is it legal? Is it safe?Is it necessary? How will it effect myself and others in the long run?How will it effect myself and others in the short run?Is this decision best for me alone or does it benefit others as well? What good can come of this decision? What consequences, if any may come about from this decision? Will others be happy with my decision even? Will others be upset with my decision, even if it’s the right choice? Will I ever regret this decision?

Now these are only a few things that you should think about before making a big decision. When I say “Big Decision”, I mean the bigger decisions in life, not whether you should buy fat free or whole milk. The decisions that have a bigger overall impact on yourself and the things around you.

Making the right decisions in life are not only important for adults but for our children as well. Remember your parents telling you “Do as I say and not as I do.”? That was because sometimes we, as adults don’t always make the right decisions, but we want our children to make the right decision. Leading by example is important to being a good influence on our children, so if you use that term then you should really explain it to them. You should explain that you don’t always make the right decisions but you don’t want them to make the same mistakes. Teach them a good decision making process when they are young. Teach them about long term consequences versus short term gratification.

When you reach a point in your life and look back at some of the decisions you’ve made, you sometimes have regret. You wish you could have done things differently, but you can’t. You can only move forward and try and make things right from there. That’s why it’s important to teach the young about these things. Try to teach them to make the right decisions from the get go and help them do this by teaching them some of the thing from above. There are too many If’s in life to let them sit in the back of your mind.
