Carbohydrate Myths

With as much confusion on the rule of carbs and proper consumption, there are always hear-say myths that need to be debunked. Too often you hear people talking about carbohydrates and they don’t even have a clue as to the different kinds of carbohydrates and the entire function of carbohydrates in the human body. I’ve summed that up already on Monday while keeping it fairly simple. Next time you over-hear someone talking about carbs and dieting, listen with a careful ear. If they sound as if they are just spouting off things that they may have heard bits and pieces of, and are not fully knowledgeable, then either ask them what exactly a carbohydrate is and what it does. Hopefully they don’t take it as an insult. If they seem open, offer your knowledge of carbs and their function. Help spread the word and not let carbohydrates get a bad reputation.

Myth #1: Cutting Carbs

Cutting carbs from my diet completely will help me lose weight: Partially true. Cutting carbs totally from your diet may help you lose weight. Not in a healthy way. You may feel sluggish and your body will normally start using muscle proteins for energy. It wants to save as much of the fat stores as it can in case it really needs to use that for energy. You may be dropping pounds on the scale, but you may not see any fat loss. Muscle weight more than fat, so it takes less to lose to make a difference on the scale. That initial drop in numbers on the scale may make your self esteem grow a little, but it’s not a healthy weight loss.

Myth #2: Fats Block Carbs

By eating fatty foods, my carbohydrate get blocked so I can eat fatty foods and still lose weight: Partially right again, but not entirely. You have to know what fats to eat. Essential fats such as fatty acids like Omega 3’s slow down the breakdown of carbohydrates to glucose, preventing them from being stored as fat cells right away. Simply thinking that you can eat a fatty diet while eating the slightly less carbohydrates is not only going to have the same effect as eating the same amount of carbohydrates but your body will start storing the non-essential fats for energy as well. It can also create an unhealthy cardiovascular system. ESSENTIAL FATS are the key.

Myth #3: Carbs Are Carbs

All carbs are not created equal. I explained the different types of carbs in the last two days. Slow carbs are a more healthy source of lasting energy, while fast carbs are good for a quick boost, but if not sued will get converted to stored energy as fat.
