QUESTIONS ABOUT STDS: CAN STDS BE CURED?

As a general rule, the answer to this question is yes. In fact, provided they are detected and treated promptly, most STDs can be cleared in only one or two visits to the doctor.

However, there are two forms of STDs, herpes and AIDS, that cannot be cured. Though medical scientists are searching for an AIDS cure, they haven’t found one yet, and people who get AIDS usually die. Herpes, too, is incurable in the sense that we don’t as yet have a

medication that will rid the body of the virus that causes the disease. However, people with herpes don’t die from the disease, nor do they always have the herpes sores. The sores go away by themselves, usually within a couple of weeks. Even though the sores may go away, the virus is still in the body, hiding away, and may return to the surface to cause new outbreaks of sores from time to time.

With the exception of AIDS and herpes, all other types of STDs are curable. But certain STDs can cause lasting damage to the body if they are not detected and treated immediately. For example, untreated gonorrhoea and chlamydia may cause PID. Although PID can usually be cured, there may be so much damage to the reproductive organs and so much scar tissue around the Fallopian tubes and ovaries that the woman becomes infertile or sterile. Syphilis can also cause lasting damage to the body if it is not treated promptly.

Because these and other STDs can result in permanent damage to the body, it is important that anyone who has STD symptoms or has had sex with someone who has an STD is tested and treated immediately.
